Die amerikanischen Indianer besitzen eine Bilderschrift, welche teils in rohen Umrissen in Felsen und Bäume eingeritzt, teils mit Farben auf Stoffe gemalt wird. Obwohl diese zur Familie der hieroglyphischen Schriften zu zählen sind hat sie doch ihren ganz eigenen Charakter.
Die erste Art der Schrift heisst Kekiwin und beschränkt sich auf allgemein verständliche Bilder, sie dient zu Nachrichten auf Reisen und zu Grabsteinen, sowie zu grösseren Felseninschriften, welche Muzzinabiks heissen; doch enthalten solche Felseninschriften auch Zeichen, welche von Schriftkundigen nicht gedeutet werden können, was vermuten lässt, dass möglicherweise die Schriftkunde bei den Indianern der Vorzeit mehr entwickelt war.
Die gemalten Zeichen heißen Kekinowin und sind nicht nur profane Schrift sondern auch magische Zeichen, an welche Zaubersprüche geknüpft werden. Die Kenntnis dieser Schrift ist Eigentum der Yossakids (Propheten) und der Medas (niederer Priester), wird jedoch von diesen für hohe Preise an einzelne Indianer verkauft, welche denselben mehr Erfolg zuschreiben, als ihrer eigenen List und Tapferkeit.

Die Zeichen dieser Schrift scheinen mit der Sprache in keiner Beziehung zu stehen, sondern nur memotechnische Mittel zu sein, um die rituellen Sprüche im Gedächtnis zu bewahren.
Ausser diesen Schriftzeichen bedienen sich die Indianer auch der Muschelschnüre (Wampumgürtel) von verschiedener Färbung und verschiedener Anreihung und Verschlingung. Diese Wampumgürtel dienten zur Beglaubigung der Botschafter, welche die einzelnen Stämme aneinander zu friedlichen und Kriegserklärungen sendeten.
